RICHMOND, Virginia (AP)— The Virginia Department of Taxation expects the elimination of its Criminal Investigative Unit to save $120,000 next year.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/11Dwlud ) reports that two investigators were laid off. Four other members of the unit were reassigned to other areas of the agency's compliance department. The changes are effective July 1.

The tax department says the moves are part of a reorganization and budget reduction.

Tax department spokesman Joel Davison says the agency will continue to provide data research associated with tax returns to local prosecutors' offices as the information is requested.
