Va. Volunteers Sought for Bay Grass Program

January 12, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is recruiting volunteers to raise underwater grasses, which are critical for the health of the bay.

The program is called Grasses for the Masses. Volunteers can attend upcoming workshops in Richmond, northern Virginia or Hampton Roads to see how it works.

At the classes, volunteers receive a self-contained kit, seeds and instructions. Then they nurture their sprouts until they are mature enough to be transplanted in rivers in late spring.

Underwater grasses have been depleted in the bay. They provide key habitat for species native to the bay and help shield the estuary from pollution.

There is a $40 fee per grass growing unit. The fee includes a one-year foundation membership.

Volunteers can also register and pay program fee online at www.cbf.org/grasses.
