The Virginia Department of Forestry has awarded more than $191,000 in grants to 122 volunteer fire departments across the state.
Ranging in size from $250 to $2,500, the grants will be used to buy items such as protective equipment, communications gear, water tanks, specialty tools and training materials.
The department says a total of 145 fire departments had applied for grants. The requests totaled $735,000.
