Va. City Seeking Bid for Olympic Trials

November 5, 2010

Hampton officials are seeking state support for their planned bid to host the 2012 Olympic wrestling and weightlifting trials.

"The Daily Press" reports that the city has asked the General Assembly for $600,000 to help pay bid fees and operational expenses. The Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau plans to ask the Virginia Tourism Corp. to provide marketing and advertising funds.

If the city's bid is successful, the trials would be held at Hampton Coliseum on April 19 through 21, 2012. City officials estimate hosting the trials would have an economic impact of at least $10 million.

November 10 is the deadline for Hampton to submit its bid. A decision is expected by late December or early January.
