Va. GOP Chairman Distances Himself from Perry Lawsuit

January 6, 2012

Virginia Republican Party Chairman Pat Millins is asking a federal court to dismiss him as a defendant in Rick Perry's legal bid to be included on the state's presidential primary ballot.

The Texas governor along with several other Republicans failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 GOP presidential primary. Only two Republicans -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Congressman Ron Paul -- made the cut.

Perry sued challenging Virginia's ballot access law requiring candidates to submit petitions bearing 10,000 valid state voter signatures to qualify. He failed to secure the required signatures.

Fellow Republicans Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Jon Huntsman joined Perry in the lawsuit this week.

Mullins' motion says he should be dismissed because the plaintiffs' dispute is with Virginia state officials and not with him.
