Va. Man Accused of Shooting Hawk with Pellet Gun

December 13, 2010

A wounded hawk whose shooting led to a felony charge against a Fredericksburg man is expected to recover fully from its injuries.

City police spokeswoman Natalia Bledsoe says federal authorities found the hawk Sunday on National Park Service land. The hawk had been shot by a pellet gun while perched in a backyard tree.

Bledsoe says 65-year-old Lop Senavanh was charged with shooting toward an occupied building, along with several misdemeanors. The felony shooting charge was unrelated to the fact that hawks are federally protected animals.

Bledsoe told The Free Lance-Star that the hawk's prognosis is good.
