Va. Man Drives Off Road, Drops 250 Feet Down Ditch

November 10, 2010

An elderly man from Staunton is recovering in the hospital after state police say he swerved off the road and down a ditch about 250 feet deep.

The accident happened Tuesday evening on Route 262, the Staunton bypass.

State police say 78-year-old Charles Almond was trying to avoid a deer when he swerved off the road, ran through the guardrail and down a ravine. Trooper Fedorchuk says Almond was lucky to survive the drop and he had several broken bones and scrapes.

Almond was airlifted to the UVA Medical Center where he's listed in "fair" condition.
