Va. Man Drowns in Smith Mountain Lake

March 17, 2012

A Henry County man has drowned in Smith Mountain Lake as sheriff's deputies tried to reach him.

The Roanoke Times reports members of the Scruggs volunteer dive team recovered the body of 57-year-old Calvin Ray Holdren of Ridgeway on Friday morning.

A Bedford County sheriff's deputy had found an abandoned vehicle near a bridge and soon spotted a man swimming in the lake.

Maj. Ricky Gardner says two officers went into the lake, but Holdren went under the surface before they could get to him.
