Authorities have identified a Hopewell man who drowned after he jumped off a boat to escape a fire.
Ron Messina with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says 27-year-old Carlos Andreas Navarro was among eight people on the boat when it caught fire Saturday.
Messina tells The Progress-Index that some of the people noticed smoke and the smell of fumes after the 20-foot boat left the Dutch Gap boat landing in Chesterfield County. One man lifted the cowling and an explosion occurred in the bay area.
Navarro and the others jumped into the James River. A dive team recovered Navarro's body.
Three people were injured.
The fire occurred Saturday night. It remains under investigation.
