National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Fort Belvoir-based 29th Infantry Division have returned after serving eight months of active duty in Afghanistan.
The soldiers were assigned to a NATO team serving as advisers and mentors on security matters to senior Afghan leaders. The team was split among five locations in Kabul.
About 30 Virginia soldiers returned to the state on Saturday. About 35 soldiers from the Maryland National Guard also took part in the mission.
A formal ceremony recognizing their service will take place in about three months.
