A Newport News officer shot a pit bull after it attacked a boy who was waiting for a school bus.
The incident occurred around 7:35 a.m. Thursday. Police say the pit bull knocked the boy down and got on top of him. The boy kicked the dog away and ran.
As the dog chased the boy, the driver of another school bus in the area called to him and told him to get on the bus. Police say the dog tried to follow the boy onto the bus but the driver was able to close the door.
The dog ran away and was later found by the officer. He shot it twice when it charged at him.
The boy suffered minor scrapes. The pit bull was euthanized due its injuries.
