UPDATE

Investigators are releasing the name of the surviving pilot involved in the mid-air crash over the weekend in Fauquier County.

Thomas Proven, 70-year-old, is listed in good condition at a Fredericksburg Hospital. He's an employee of the Federal Aviation Administration and declined interview requests. Now, Canadian officals are taking over the investigation because the planes involved were owned by FAA and Transportation officials. The medical examiner's office has not yet identified the pilot and passenger in the other plane.

Virginia State Police are releasing new information about a deadly crash in Fauqier County.

Authorities say they recovered two bodies from a six-seater aircraft after the Monday afternoon collision, which caused the planes to crash a mile apart from each other.

One of the planes caught fire when the two planes hit. The pilot and the passenger of that plane were both killed. The pilot of the second plane was transported to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. His condition was not immediately known but a spokeswoman said he spoke to troopers.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said both planes were small, private aircraft. She said the plane operated by the pilot was injured appeared to be inbound for the Warrenton-Fauquier airport. Brown said that plane, a Piper PA-28, landed safely.

Brown said FAA investigators were dispatched to the scene.

Wreckage from one of the planes landed in John Leddon's backyard and he says it was a sight he'll never forget.

"The crash site is probably about 16 feet long, part of a right wing. You could tell that whoever was in that probably did not survive," said Leddon.

Meanwhile officials are not releasing the name of the surviving pilot until family members can be informed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
