A Suffolk police spokeswoman says a man suspected of attacking an officer after a traffic stop has been arrested.
Spokeswoman Debbie George says 43-year-old Joe L. Staton of Portsmouth was arrested Saturday after a seven-hour search.
The Virginian-Pilot reports Suffolk officer James Winslow had pulled over a vehicle that had been reported stolen. The driver then fled on foot into a wooded area. Officers found Winslow unconscious with head injuries.
George says Winslow is in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after undergoing surgery.
She says Staton was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Norfolk on a probation violation. He was still being interviewed Saturday evening and George says among the pending charges Staton faces are aggravated malicious wounding and grand larceny.
