A southwest Virginia school board has approved an agreement reached during mediation over a lawsuit seeking to remove the Ten Commandments from a high school wall.
The Giles County School Board on Thursday approved the deal, which will be submitted to U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanski for approval.
Rebecca Glenberg, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, says the commandments' removal will make the school more welcoming to students of all faiths.
The ACLU sued the school board on behalf of an unnamed student who claimed that the display was an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion. After Urbanski raised questions in the case and ordered both sides to enter mediation, the board voted to remove the commandments from Narrows High School.
