Va. Teen Convicted in School Explosives Plot

November 23, 2010

A jury in Virginia Beach has convicted a former Landstown High School student on 18 charges related to a plot to attack the school with explosives and sawed-off shotguns.

The jury rejected 19-year-old Philip Bay's insanity defense Monday. Bay faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced in two months.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that prosecutors portrayed Bay as the mastermind of a plot to kill at least 30 people. Authorities have said the attack was thwarted when another student whom Bay enlisted to help carry it out went to police.

The defense argued that Bay suffered from mental illness brought on, in part, by a dysfunctional home life and years of bullying.
