Va. Zoo Giraffe Dies on Hoof Condition

November 16, 2010

Officials at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk say an eight-year-old female giraffe has died from a hoof condition.

Zoo officials say the condition caused the edges of the giraffe's hooves to grow and roll inward, harming weight-bearing bones and muscles.

The Virginian-Pilot reports zookeepers had trimmed and filed the hooves regularly and had equipped the giraffe's stall with padded mats. But she was unable to stand up in her stall and died Sunday.
