Va. to Release 78 DNA Post-Conviction Test Reports

May 10, 2012

Virginia officials plan to release reports on post-conviction testing that excluded the DNA of 78 people convicted of crimes.

Virginia Department of Forensic Science chief deputy director Gail Jaspen says the reports will be released after July 1 under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/JwBkI8) says Jaspen told the Board of Forensic Science on Wednesday that her department will comply with a state budget amendment approved by the General Assembly last month.

The amendment directs the release of the reports, unless they are deemed by prosecutors as critical to a current investigation. Jaspen said the amendment appears to be a response to FOIA requests for the information submitted by the newspaper and the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project.
