Virginia Can Block FOIA Requests from Non-Va. Citizens

April 29, 2013

The Supreme Court says it is legal for Virginia to block out-of-state people from using the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) to get state documents.

The Court unanimously upheld a federal appeals court decision validating Virginia's limitation of its FOIA law to state citizens and some media outlets.

Men from California and Rhode Island wanted to use the Virginia FOIA to get state documents, but were denied because they are not citizens of Virginia.

Justices say that Virginia's refusal to make the information available did not violate the men's Constitutional rights.
