Virginia State Police are investigating a crash in Henry County that led to the death of an on-duty sergeant.

Police say the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 2:20 a.m. Saturday for a crash on Chatham Road near Pennrail Lane. Responders found a blue Chevrolet Impala had crashed into a road sign.

Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi was the lone person inside the car. The 65-year-old sergeant was taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police say the crash and circumstances of Phillippi’s death are still under investigation.

Phillippi was assigned to the Virginia State Police Salem Division and was on duty, working the overnight supervisory shift, at the time of his death.
