BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Tech University President Charles Steger is stepping down.

Steger announced his plans to retire in an email to students, faculty and staff on Tuesday. Steger says he'll remain on the job until his replacement is found.

Steger has been president since 2000.

He led the school during the 2007 mass shootings in which a student gunman killed 32 students and faculty before shooting himself. Some victims and parents blamed Steger for not warning campus sooner that the gunman had killed two students in a dorm room. The alert moved two hours later, as the gunman chained shut the doors to a classroom building where the other 30 were killed.

The state Supreme Court will hear arguments in June that Steger should be put on trial for his actions.
