BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Tech police officer slain in the line of duty one year ago is being remembered with a campus memorial made of Hokie stone.
The Roanoke Times says about 250 people attended a memorial Saturday for Officer Deriek Crouse. He was fatally shot in his police cruiser.
A student from nearby Radford University ambushed Crouse on Dec. 8, 2011, as he was working a traffic stop on the Blacksburg campus. The gunman killed himself shortly afterward.
Besides law enforcement officials, Crouse's wife, children and extended family attended the memorial.
