Virginia Students Outperform Peers Nationwide on ACT Test

August 17, 2011

Virginia students performed better than their peers nationwide on the 2011 ACT college entrance exam.

Results released Tuesday show 76 percent of the 20,500 students who took the ACT were ready for freshman level English courses. The national rate was 66 percent.

Sixty-one percent of ACT-tested students in Virginia were ready for freshman level reading courses, compared to 52 percent nationally.

Thirty-two percent of the Virginia students met or surpassed all four of the test's benchmarks measuring their preparedness for college English, reading, math and science. That's up from 31 percent in 2010.

The state's average composite score was 22.3, the same score as last year. The national composite score was 21.1.

Colleges and universities use scores on the college entrance exam for admissions, scholarship decisions and course placement.
