Virginia Tech Professors Develop New Breast Cancer Treatment

October 11, 2010

Two professors at Virginia Tech say they have found a new and better way to treat breast cancer using lasers.

The method, developed by Brenda Winkel and Karen Brewer, is showing great promise in clinical trials. They have developed molecules that are not harmful when inside the body until they are activated by a laser.

This helps isolate the treatment.

"The idea is that you would feel perfectly healthy," said Brewer. "The only part of the body that would die would be the part that was exposed to the light, which would be the tumor."

The treatment could be available within six years.
