Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has been awarded a $3.8 million grant to lead a multistate effort to enhance East Coast grape and wine production.
The funding is from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The project director is Tony Wolf, a professor of viticulture.
According to Wolf, the five-year project aims to create, refine and encourage industry adoption of grape and wine production practices intended to create a robust and sustainable grape and wine industry.
Virginia is No. 5 in the nation in wine grape production. The industry has a total economic impact of more than $362 million per year.
