Virginia Using Road Signs to Promote Wine Regions

April 20, 2012

Gov. Bob McDonnell is unveiling a new Virginia wine regions sign program aimed at attracting more visitors to Virginia wineries.

McDonnell's office said Thursday that the signs will announce to travelers on selected primary and secondary roads that they have entered a particular Virginia American Viticultural Area or wine region. The first phase of the program consists of seventeen signs in four Virginia Viticultural Areas and one well-known wine region.

The first sign was unveiled Thursday at King Family Vineyards in Crozet. The Monticello Virginia American Viticultural Area is home to 40 wineries.

Virginia is home to more than 200 wineries and is fifth in the nation for wine grape production. A newly released economic impact study shows that Virginia's wine industry contributes nearly $750 million annually to Virginia's economy.
