Volunteers Clean 150k Pounds of Debris from Chesapeake Bay

June 3, 2012

Volunteers who turned out for an annual effort to keep the Chesapeake Bay clean found an old military stretcher, a soccer goal, a $50 bill and a light bulb covered with live oysters.

Those items were among more common finds such as plastic bottles, plastic bags and cigarette butts that more than 6,500 volunteers gathered along Virginia's waterways and beaches on Saturday's Clean the Bay Day.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says early estimates show that volunteers picked up more than 150,000 pounds of debris along about 500 miles of shoreline. Household appliances, automobile parts and tires and other large items also made the list of cleanup finds during the 24th annual event.

Since Clean the Bay Day's inception, volunteers have removed about 5.8 million pounds of debris from waterways.
