The Orange County Hornets squared off with the Goochland Bulldogs in a pivotal early-season Jefferson District contest Friday night. Goochland entered Friday's matchup with a 3-1 record, hoping to steal a district win on the road.
Goochland, on their opening drive, would sniff the endzone first. After a David Mckenna run put the Bulldogs on the goal line, quarterback Matthew Henley called his own number and took it into the endzone for a 7-0 Bulldog lead.
Not to be outdone, the Hornets answered right back on their opening drive. Dominique Walker hurdled a defender on his way to paydirt, tying the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
However, the Bulldogs came ready to play Friday night. Henley called his number for the second time on the goal line and scored on the sneak for the second time in the first half, 14-7 Goochland. And just before the half, a great run by Ezell of the Bulldogs set up Colby Cook with a chip shot field goal. Goochland entered the locker room with a 17-7 lead.
Orange head coach John Kayajanian knew that his team would get all they could handle from the Bulldogs, and the Hornets came out for the second half ready to play. Quarterback Cameron Hughes connected with Dominique Walker out of the backfield for a touchdown, putting the Hornets back in the game, 17-14.
Goochland however, would show some impressive fortitude Friday night, fending off an Orange comeback. Dustin Plummer would take the pitch from Henley and race around the corner to the pylon, 24-14 Goochland.
The two teams would trade scores late in the game, with Goochland coming out on top over Orange 31-21. Goochland improved to 4-1 on the season and Orange falls to 2-3 on the year. Orange will travel to Louisa (3-2) on October 9 for another pivotal Jefferson District matchup.
