Two of the three candidates in the race for the 5th District Congressional seat attended Wednesday's Senior Statesman of Virginia candidate forum in Albemarle County. Incumbent Tom Perriello (D) and Jeff Clark (I) addressed around 300 constituents at the Senior Center, however the seat saved for challenger Robert Hurt (R) was left vacant.

Hurt has said in the past that he believes Jeff Clark is not a true candidate and would not appear in any forum or debate that included Clark.

"Because of my participation, one of the other candidates couldn't be here. I think it's important that everyone be able to hear from all the candidates," said Clark.

"No one is entitled to this seat. No one gets it for free. You have to fight for it, and make the case to the voters," said Perriello.

The Senior Statesman says Wednesday's event was their eighth candidate forum, and the first where a major candidate declined an invitation. Some 5th District voters believe Hurt made the wrong choice.

"It can't help him. It's got to hurt. He's got to face Tom [Perriello] at some point, and I just don't understand why he wouldn't," said Vito Cetta.

Despite Hurt's absence, the candidates still debated the important issues in this election. Perriello defended his vote for President Barack Obama's stimulus bill, and Clark told the audience he does not consider himself the Tea Party candidate.

"A group of economists from across the spectrum came out last week and said they believe this [bill] prevented the second great depression," said Perriello.

"I'm not technically the Tea Party candidate, but I do believe in their values. I do believe my principles fall in line with what the Tea Party wants to bring forward," said Clark.

Hurt supporters were still spotted in the audience Wednesday, and information tables were set up for all three candidates.

@ Wendy Hoffman, I am sorry about your son. I hope his recovery is quick and complete. I agree with your statements fully. Mr. Hurt is showing complete disrespect. I only hope there are enough of us independents out there to make a difference in this election. I am so sick of these political pendulum swings from far right to far left and back to the far right, etc., etc.

"Has anyone ever asked Mr. Clark, "where did all the jobs go in Danville?" " According to what I have read Mr. Clark has no prior political experience. If he has never held political office how can anyone blame him for jobs disappearing in Danville (or anywhere else for that matter)? I am not holding his lack of political experience against him either. As far as I am concerned they need to start from scratch in DC, getting rid of people with the same old ideas.

Mrs. Hoffman is right. Hurt deserves our disdain when he shows disrespect of our democratic process. What would Jefferson do -- test his opponents with smarts and wits against this opponents OR run away and hide from the public process?
