Nelson County Sheriff challenger Mac Bridgwater, who lost to incumbent David Brooks by nine votes, will seek a recount, according to a report by Nelson County Life.

Bridgwater, the Republican candidate, received 2,597 votes (46.4%) compared to 2,606 votes (46.6%) for Brooks, the Democratic candidate.

“Someone’s got to win and someone’s got to lose. At this point, we’re trying to find out who won,” Bridgwater said in a phone interview with Nelson County Life Wednesday morning.

Bridgwater has yet to concede the race, and the razor-thin margin between the two allows for a recount under state law (recounts are legal as long as candidates are separated by less than one percent of votes).

Sheriff Brooks says he stands by the results but adds that his opponent is well within his rights to request a recount.

Nelson County Election Registrar Jackie Britt told Nelson County Life once the election is certified, which must be done within three days, there will be a ten-day waiting period before Bridgwater can formally request a recount.

No one on here ever said that crime was spiraling out of control. In my estimation crime has stayed the same since Brooks took office. I am not saying that if Mac wins the re-count that he is going to fix everything. I AM saying that the office would be run fairly and provided more leadership. The relationships with surrounding agencies is almost non-existent with the Sheriff's office. I just want the best for my county and for the most qualified person to be in the office to represent my county and protect my family.

I use a "k" in lieu of a "c" in the spelling of Demokrat to remind myself that the KKK, i.e., the Ku Klux Klan was the strong arm of the Demokratic Party in the South and Mid-West for almost 100 years. Many Demokrats would like folks to forget about all that special relationship they had.

Yes he is well loved in the county. Especially by the criminal element that live here. Brooks fixes multiple tickets a week for his "people." Come on someone start an investigation, you will see!
