Nelson County Sheriff challenger Mac Bridgwater has filed for a recount. The Republican submitted the paperwork on Nov. 18.

Bridgwater trails Democratic incumbent David Brooks by less than a dozen votes, 2,609 to 2,598. The two are separated by two-tenths of a percentage point.

The razor-thin margin between the two allows for a recount under state law - recounts are legal as long as candidates are separated by less than one percent of votes.

Per state law, the petition for a recount was filed with the Nelson County Circuit Court. The chief Judge of the Circuit Court in Nelson and two other judges appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia comprise the recount court.

“Someone’s got to win and someone’s got to lose. At this point, we’re trying to find out who won,” Bridgwater said in a phone interview with Nelson County Life earlier this month.

Sheriff Brooks says he stands by the results, but adds that his opponent is well within his rights to request a recount.

@ Bystander.....Let one look at this completely....During the last three months prior to the election, two of the three candidates, were NOT working....subsequently allowing two of the three to go door to door and terrify (according to stories told to me at the polls) the citizens of Nelson County...So...yes, the trust is down, but.....I know of no candidate that cares more about the citizens of this county and he does not use scare tactics to get votes, he shows compassion and kindness...and for you who think that is the wrong way to "run" a county, maybe you need to re-evaulte your thought process..

It's pretty sad when a democrat runs as a republican just so they can pick up his tab. It's hard to face it when you are a loser!
