Signs will be in place on Monday alerting motorists to the planned closure of Jefferson Park Avenue on Monday, April 4.
The closure is necessary to begin waterline relocation and construction of the temporary pedestrian bridge associated with the replacement of the bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad.
In January, R. R. Dawson Bridge Co., LLC, of Lexington, KY was awarded the $5.8 million contract for construction of the new bridge. The new structure will be 67 feet wide with travel lanes built to current standards as well as dedicated bike lanes and a sidewalk to accommodate the significant pedestrian traffic in the area.
The current bridge was built prior to 1932 and has an 8-ton weight limit. Fire and emergency vehicles cannot use this structure and transit services are limited to smaller equipment.
The project is slated for completion by September 24, 2012.

Definitely need more info. What does "JPA to close" really mean? My impression was that only the bridge would be closed, but never the whole stretch of JPA (between Emmett and Frye's Spring Station restaurant). This will impact so many people on their commute to school, work, or doctor's appointments at UVA. We need to know to plan ahead. What portion(s) will be closed, and for how long will it be closed if it's more than just the bridge alone. And what about JPA extended? How far from the bridge will traffic be cut off if you're coming from the direction of the Fry Spring Beach Club/Old Lynchburg Road/Cherry Avenue? What about bus route changes? This is huge. Need more info.
Can we have some more info included? How much of JPA will be closed? Will pedestrians be able to use the bridge at all? What about the businesses right there at the bridge? Will they be affected? How long will the relocation and ped. bridge construction last? I walk from lower JPA to catch the Trolley and need to know how this will affect my schedule?
