The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a public hearing on a proposed project to improve the intersection of Route 607 (Matthew Mill Road) and Route 29 (Seminole Trail) in Greene County.
The hearing will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ruckersville Elementary School.
VDOT proposes to improve safety and increase capacity of the intersection by widening Route 607 to five lanes. This will provide an eastbound left-turn lane into the Sheetz service center and an additional westbound left-turn lane onto Route 29 south. The project also includes construction of a new traffic signal at the intersection.
Route 607 is a two-lane collector road that serves as an alternate route for commuters between Route 29 in Ruckersville and Route 33 to the east. A number of development projects, both residential and commercial, are anticipated in close proximity to the project.
At its intersection with Route 29, the road currently has one eastbound through lane, a westbound shared left-turn/through lane, and a westbound right-turn lane. Route 607 carries 7,112 vehicles per day, according to a 2010 count.
The project’s estimated cost is $2.27 million and is subject to change as the project’s design is finalized. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2014 and last approximately nine months.
Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the project and answer questions.
