Friday, the new John Warner Parkway opened to traffic. The road brings more traffic to Melborne Road right in front of Charlottesville High School. Charlottesville Police say area students need to be aware of the new traffic patterns and increase in cars.

"The intersection has changed from its original implementation, with signal changes, and traffic lights to accommodate the volume," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts with the Charlottesville Police Department.

Lt. Ronnie Roberts says students especially need to be aware of the increase in cars.

"They may want to depart a little bit early so they can get through the traffic congestion near the schools," said Lt. Roberts. Lt. Roberts says other drivers may get impatient in the traffic, and aggressive.

"The one thing they need to be cognizant of is to maintain that following distance, and to be aware of what is in front and around you," said Lt. Roberts.

Lt. Roberts suggests practicing the drive.

"Have your parents take you out getting acclimated to the changes especially those that drive to and from school," said Lt. Roberts. Police are also out in full force in marked, and unmarked cars, making sure everyone follows the rules.

"Officers there will be highly visible, up near the schools," said Lt. Roberts.

Making sure everyone studies the changes so they can make the grade when it comes to mastering the new road.
