For many, flip flops are a trademark of the summer weather. However, for this week's segment of Sargent Solutions, CBS19's Tiffani Sargent examined how the flimsy footwear could send you right to the Emergency Room if you are not careful.

It is estimated that 60 percent of Americans own at least two pairs of flip flops.

"Freedom, it's like your feet feeling like you're almost barefoot," said Tim Osinkosky. Many say they enjoy flip flops because it allows their feet to breathe. However, podiatrists argue that they are best when worn in moderation.

"We see injuries ranging from toe fractures, to the common strain and sprain of the foot and ankle," said Dr. Robert Baglio. Dr. Baglio says the footwear can also cause more extreme injuries.

"This individual rolled their ankle, pretty severely and broke their ankle and was transferred by rescue squad to the emergency department," said Dr. Baglio. The extreme injury called for screws and a plate to be surgically implanted to support the ankle and help it to heal properly

Dr. Baglio recommends that a more sturdy sandal be warn when people are doing strenuous activities.

"They're more like a trail shoe, but offer a sandal aesthetic to them," said Dr. Baglio. "In this environment we live in, people like to hike and walk through streams and what lies beneath the water, in some of these murky areas, could be sharp objects."

While the shoes are more expensive, experts say the extra cost will pay off in prevention.

"You don't have to worry about them falling off and you've got some good traction in case you want to climb up on something, or you've got to run at some point," said John Bertram.

Forget which airport I was passing thru, but watching parents dragging their kids (under 10) thru Airports to catch a plane, and wearing flip-flops, makes me sick. It is like common sense has left this country. Flip-flops are for the beach, not the airports, and especially not in the schools.

Good Lord, What would Jimmy Buffett think! JB alredy warned me, "blew out my flip flop, stepepped on a pop top". I will not be climbing mountains with flip flops and if you do you are probably not reading this anyway! FYI Parrotheads will not like this!
