Touted as an assembly to honor recent accolades achieved by Woodbrook Elementary, students and staff filed in to the auditorium Thursday, a select few knowing that their principal was in fact receiving a national award.

"And when they then awarded it as being an educator of the year award, I was just totally blown away, totally honored, and humbled because it really is about the kids and about the staff here and our parent support," said Woodbrook principal William Sterrett.

The Milken Foundation looks for the best educators throughout the country.

"We think that it's one of the most important jobs in our country and we need young people to think of that career for themselves so that we have bright young people leading us in the future," said Jane Foley, vice president of the Milken Family Foundation.

Another surprise, the $25,000 check for the recipient.

"One student in the front row said, 'Dr. Sterrett that is a lot of laptops,'" said Sterrett.

But Sterrett says none of this would be possible without support.

"Principals are only as good as the staff they work with we have an incredible staff here that take learning to a higher level," said Sterrett.

And in a country where athletes, and actors are often awarded, the foundation says it's wonderful for them to be able to recognize educators.

"To be in an elementary school and see students stand up and cheer for their teachers to be recognized and to cheer for their principal, that's what's really important," said Foley.
