Northern Virginia Educators Cancel Taliban Debate
An Arlington County principal has called off an assignment that asked students to represent views of the Taliban in a mock United Nations.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - An Arlington County principal has called
off an assignment that asked students to represent views of the
Taliban in a mock United Nations.
Eighth graders at Swanson Middle School had been asked to
research and debate solutions for conflicts around the world. One
focused on Afghanistan and asked some students to research the
Taliban's views.
Principal Chrystal Forrester cut that section with two teachers
on Monday. She says she didn't want controversy to undermine a
lesson about building persuasive arguments and supporting them with
research.
Parent Chris Wilson says he found it morally questionable to ask
students to represent the Taliban's views.
Another parent says it would have been a chance to learn about
more than one side of a world conflict.
