The Charlottesville City School Board plans to ask City Council for financial help to close a more than $4 million budget deficit for the 2013 fiscal year. However, councilors say they're dealing with similar budget issues and may not be able to help.
"As you know, we have our own [near] $2 million deficit before we even got to the news of the school board's $4 million deficit," said Councilor Kathy Galvin.
Until now, the school system has managed to find solutions. City council agreed to replace a no longer issued state fund of $670,000 and another $98,000 will come from the city's budget office. The school board also wants to use $1.5 million originally allocated for capital improvement projects to make a dent in the deficit. Plus, they're asking city council for an additional $1.1 million.
"City council will look at their request like other requests that we have in front of us. We'll try to help them as best as we can," said Mayor Satyendra Huja.
Officials say that still leaves the school system approximately $990,000 in the hole. At a work session over the weekend, they suggested a handful of reductions to eliminate the remaining money. For a list of those adjustments, click here.
"The more we can whittle down that deficit the more that we retain all of the programs that has made us a very successful school division," Galvin said.
The next budget meeting will take place Monday night at 6 p.m.

City schools have always had too many non-teaching personnel-supervisors, coordinators etc etc. Time to get rid of ALL of those positions and focus on the classroom!!!!
We just HAD to have tablet computers for every middle school and high school student last year, and this year we just HAD to have new artsy bike racks and we just HAD to have a new permanent position added to the payroll to advocate for bicycling and we just HAD to let the Occupiers stay in the park for free costing us extra money for clean-up, electricity and police, and we just HAD to...... The list goes on and on, and then they scratch their heads and whine, "we don't have any money, wah-wah-wah, help!"
