Morgan Brian and her Virginia soccer teammates may have come up short in their run to a national title trophy. But Brian still has a shot at the sport's highest individual honor.
On Thursday, Brian was named one of three female finalists for this year's MAC Hermann Trophy. College soccer's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, the Hermann goes to the best player in the sport each season. This year's male and female winners will be announced on January 10.
UVa has never had a women's soccer player win a Hermann Trophy, and Brian is just the second player from the program to be named a finalist. A junior midfielder, Brian led the ACC in both assists (14) and total points (46), and her 16 goals were third in the league.
The other two finalists include North Carolina midfielder Crystal Dunn, who won the Hermann last year, and was the ACC's offensive player of the year this season; and UCLA's Abby Dahlkemper, who was the central defender for the national champs, and anchored a defense that had the lowest goals-against average (0.27) in the country.
