The Virginia softball team swept Delaware State, 9-1 and 10-1, Wednesday afternoon. With the wins, the Cavaliers improved to 18-19 on the season.
In the first game, the Cavaliers broke open the contest in the second inning with a five-run rally with two outs. Junior Peyton Larus walked with the bases loaded to score senior Alex Skinkis, followed by a single by senior Taylor Williams that scored sophomore Heidi Velk.
Junior Marcy Bowdren then doubled to right center to clear the bases.
The Cavaliers added two runs in the fifth to finish off the game with Harris and Skinkis earning RBIs.
Senior Melanie Mitchell had eight strikeouts with three hits and one run in five innings of work to pick up the win (13-11). Mitchell passed 200 strikeouts for the season (202) and has become the first UVa pitcher to record four seasons with 200 or more strikeouts.
In the second game, the Cavaliers sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning on the way to a 10-1 win in five innings.
Williams, Meghan Harris and Velk each had two hits, while Williams and Bowdren each scored two runs. Harris recorded two RBI in both games.
Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Tallahassee, Fla., April 14-15 for a three-game series at Florida State.
