'Hoos Sweep Doubleheader Over FSU

The Virginia baseball team topped Florida State twice Saturday, winning game one 9-2 and finishing with a 2-0 victory in the second game.

"To be able to sweep a doubleheader in this league, especially against someone the caliber of Florida State is a really nice feather in our cap," head coach Brian O'Connor said. "That being said, tomorrow's game counts the same in the league's standings as either one of these games did."

In game two, Scott Silverstein allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, adding six strikeouts. Kyle Crockett finished the day on the mound, allowing no hits in the final two innings.

"That's how you win championship baseball right there. Would we like to knock the fences down in both games and score a lot of runs? We'd love that. But you win by high quality pitching and playing defense," O'Connor stated. "If you get that on a consistent basis you're going to have a championship type program and we got that today."

In the fifth inning, Brandon Cogswell had a two-out, two-run double that put the Cavaliers on top 2-0, the only runs in the game.

In game one, the 'Hoos rolled past Florida State, winning 9-2. Nick Howard scored his first career home run in the second inning, a two run shot to center that scored Mike Papi, to make it 2-0.

Both teams scored once in the third to make it 3-1, before Derek Fisher homered in the fourth to give the Cavaliers the 5-1 lead.

Virginia tacked on two more runs in the fifth, when Brandon Downes homered to left center to score Brandon Cogswell.

Brandon Waddell got the win on the mound, going six innings with three strikeouts, and allowing four hits and one earned run.

The Cavaliers improve to 34-6 overall and 15-5 in the ACC. They go for series sweep at 1pm Sunday.

"To be able to do that against this kind of club and this type of pitching is very impressive. Obviously it's something that doesn't happen everyday so the baseball was in our favor today," sophomore outfielder Derek Fisher added.
