Cavaliers Roll Past Duke

The Virginia baseball team pounded out a season-high 22 hits in a 17-8 win over Duke Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field. With the win, the Cavaliers earn their seventh ACC series win in nine tries.

The 22-hit barrage was Virginia’s most hits in a game since the Cavaliers racked up 28 hits in a 27-4 victory at Maryland on April 23, 2010.

Eleven Virginia batters recorded hits, including all nine starters. Mike Papi went 4-for-4, scored three times and drove in four as he upped his NCAA-best on base percentage to .545. Brandon Downes, Reed Gragnani, Joe McCarthy and Kenny Towns each had three hits.

UVa starting pitcher Scott Silverstein went five innings to earn the win and improve to 8-1 on the year. He allowed six earned runs, seven hits and three walks while fanning three. Four Cavalier relievers worked an inning each to seal the win.

Virginia scored in each of the first five innings and six of its eight trips to the plate. UVa eclipsed its season high for hits in a game in just four innings, racking up 18 to take a commanding 15-1 lead.

UVa's 22 hits were the most hits of any ACC team in conference play this year. The 'Hoos go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday. Senior Day ceremonies will be held prior to the Sunday contest at 12:30 p.m.; UVa will honor six fourth- and fifth-year student-athletes as well as a manager Taylor Myers.
