Cavs Come Up Short Against No. 2 Notre Dame

The Virginia women's basketball team lost a hard fought game to No. 2 Notre Dame Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena. The undefeated Fighting Irish won 79-72, their only single-digit win of the season.

The Cavaliers led only once in the game but kept it close throughout. After the Irish opened a 13-point lead early in the second half, UVa came back and cut it to 2 points with 3:49 remaining. Notre Dame held on for the win to improve to 15-0 on the season and 3-0 in the ACC.

"It's a motivational tactic to come out and just try to put a team away in those first four minutes of the second half," UVa head coach Joanne Boyle said of her team keeping it close late in the game. "I said, 'do not buy into that. Do not buy into the fact that they're going to come out and pound us. Do not let it happen.' I'm just so proud of them for moments like that in terms of just staying the course."

"Welcome to the ACC for us," Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said after the win. "We hoped for a little nice welcome from Virginia and they were tough. It was a great game."

Faith Randolph led the 'Hoos with 23 points, a new career high for the sophomore, while Sarah Imovbioh added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

"Notre Dame is second in the country and we can go up against them," Randolph said. "We have this stretch of all ranked teams, and we're just going to go at it."

Next up, the Cavaliers travel to face No. 3 Duke on Jan. 16.
