Cavalier Softball Drops Doubleheader at Georgia Tech

Freshman Madison Labshere hit two home runs, but the Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games at Georgia Tech, 10-2 (six innings) and 3-2 (eight innings), Wednesday. With the losses, the Cavaliers fell to 3-18 and 1-7 in the ACC.

In the second game, Labshere led off the fourth inning with a deep home run to left-center field to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. After GT responded with a run, junior Heidi Velk doubled to right-center field to score freshman Iyana Hughes, who had singled and stole second, and reclaim the lead for Virginia, 2-1, in the fifth.

The Yellow Jackets scored one in the sixth to force extra innings and scored in the eighth when Hayley Downs scored on a bases-loaded single by Katie Johnsky.

Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine allowed three runs in seven innings with four strikeouts, but took the loss to fall to 3-16 on the season.

In the first game, Georgia Tech scored 10 runs on eight hits, while taking advantage of three Cavalier errors on the way to a 10-2 win. The Yellow Jackets finished the game on a grand slam by Colleen Darragh in the sixth inning with no outs, her second home run of the game.

The Cavaliers scored both of their runs in the fourth on back-to-back home runs by junior Velk and Labshere. It was Velk’s first home run of her collegiate career, while it was Labshere’s third of the season.

Chapdelaine allowed three runs in three innings of work in the loss, while freshman Lindsay Mayer gave up seven runs (four earned) in two innings of relief.

The Cavaliers return home to begin a nine-game home stand this weekend when they host ACC newcomer Syracuse. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and Sunday’s single game is slated for a noon start.
