Fisher, Cavaliers Outlast FSU in Opener

Derek Fisher is officially back for the top-ranked Virginia baseball team.

Fisher went 3-for-5 Friday night, with his third double of the night driving in the go-ahead runs in No. 1 Virginia's 5-3 win in Tallahassee against No. 4 Florida State Friday night. The Cavaliers improved to 36-7 on the season, while FSU fell to 32-10.

Whit Mayberry (4-0) got the win in relief for UVa after throwing three scoreless innings, including pitching out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Howard struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th inning for his ACC-leading 14th save.

UVa took the lead in the fifth when John La Prise led off the inning with his first career college homer. Mike Papi's team-best eighth homer in the eighth tied the game 3-3.
