The Virginia softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Virginia Tech, 6-0 and 5-1, at The Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers fell to 20-27 on the season and 3-17 in the ACC.
In the top of the third, Virginia Tech’s Lauren Gaskill hit a 2-run home run to left center to open the scoring.
Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell allowed six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in the loss (15-16).
In the second game, Virginia Tech out hit the Cavaliers, 9-4, on the way to a 5-1 win.
With VT leading 2-0 in the fourth, the Cavaliers cut the lead to one on a RBI single by junior Karli Johnson that scored sophomore Heidi Velk.
The Hokies extended the lead to 4-1 in the fifth on a home run by Kat Banks and a RBI double by Bailey Liddle. Gaskill hit her second home run of the day in the sixth to push the lead to 5-1.
Freshman pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine pitched a complete game, allowing five runs in seven innings, but took the loss (5-10).
The two teams conclude the series with a single game Monday (April 29). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU. It will be the Cavaliers’ regular season finale.
