Virginia fought off a feisty VMI team, 8-6, Wednesday night on Military Appreciation Night at Davenport Field. Virginia improved to 27-3 with the win.
Freshman Trey Oest picked up the victory on the mound, tossing 5.1 innings with five earned runs and seven strikeouts. Kyle Crockett came on and recorded his fourth save.
Brandon Downes led the Wahoos at the dish with a pair of hits, runs scored and RBIs. Mike Papi also drove in two and Joe McCarthy, Kenny Towns and Nick Howard had multi-hit games.
Virginia will travel to Winston-Salem for a three-game set with Wake Forest beginning Friday.
