Hoos Hoping to Ride Momentum into ACC Play

The No. 2 Virginia women's soccer team is off to its best start since 2004 and hopes to continue that momentum into the start of ACC play Thursday.

The Wahoos will welcome conference newcomer Syracuse to Klöckner Stadium, kicking off UVa's defense of its ACC Championship.

"One of our short term goals is to defend that title, the ACC Championship but we have to take it one game at a time and play the soccer we can play and I think everything else will take care of itself," junior midfielder Morgan Brian explained.

Virginia leads the country in goals scored and has beaten top-10 teams like Santa Clara and Penn State in its non-conference schedule.

"I feel like we're definitely getting good games in and getting prepared for the ACC," sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak said. "It's such a tough conference. I think we're getting ready and know what we have to work on in practice and just step-by-step."

Coach Steve Swanson has seen his share of fast starts. That 2004 team won its first nine games of the season and Swanson believes this team is capable of making another such run.

"I think the biggest thing now moving forward is how much better can we get and is there the want to get better," Swanson said. "And I feel confident that this team, that's what they'll do."
