Wahoos' NCAA Hopes Still Alive After Upset of Terps

Virginia's NCAA Tournament hopes in men's lacrosse are still alive, thanks to Friday's 13-6 upset of top seed Maryland in in ACC semifinals.

The Cavaliers improved to 7-7 with the win, their first against a conference opponent this season. Virginia advances to Sunday's ACC championship, where the Cavaliers will face North Carolina. The Tar Heels escaped with a wild 18-17 win over Duke in Friday's second semifinal.

Virginia needs to win Sunday's title game to finish 8-7, which would make the Cavaliers eligible for consideration for the NCAA Tournament. A loss on Sunday would drop Virginia to 7-8, and teams with losing records are ineligible for NCAA consideration.

Junior Mark Cockerton, the nation's leading goal scorer, scored four times for the Cavaliers in Friday's win -- including a hat trick in the first half, as Virginia built a 5-2 halftime lead. Maryland cut the Virginia lead to one goal with about three minutes left in the third quarter, but the Terrapins were outscored 7-1 from that point on.

The Cavaliers, who went 0-4 in the ACC during the regular season, never trailed in Friday's game.

Matt White had a six-point game for the Cavaliers (three goals and three assists), while Rob Emery and Nick O'Reilly added two goals apiece. O'Reilly, Virginia's leading scorer this spring, also had a pair of assists.
