After trailing throughout much of the game, the Virginia women's lacrosse team rallied to upset North Carolina, 10-9, Saturday in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in Chapel Hill. The Cavaliers advance to the national semifinals and will play Syracuse on Friday in Towson, Md.
The Tar Heels held a 7-4 lead at the halftime break, but UVa outscored UNC 6-2 in the second half. Down 8-4, the 'Hoos scored six unanswered goals to take a 10-8 lead. The Heels answered with a goal with 4:17 remaining, but UVa held on for the win.
The win over North Carolina was the first for Virginia since the 2010 regular season. Entering this matchup, UNC had won nine games in a row over UVa. The Heels ended UVa's season last year in the NCAA quarterfinals on their way to winning the national championship.The Cavaliers also snapped a 15-game winning streak in NCAA Tournament home games for the Tar Heels.
