Mitchell's Historic Day Leads Cavs Past Boston College

Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell had a record day as the Virginia softball team defeated Boston College, 4-1, to claim the series Saturday. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 14-16 on the season, 3-6 in the ACC.

Mitchell tied Lisa Palmer for the most wins in UVa history with 74. The senior also became the first Cavalier and seventh Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher to reach 1,000 career strikeouts. With 13 today in seven innings of work, Mitchell (11-9) has 1,008 for her career.

After BC scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the second with three runs. Sophomore Megan Harris led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior Alex Skinkis.

Fellow senior Kristen Hawkins earned a walk and classmate Lauren Didlake followed with her first career home run to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 advantage.

Junior Karli Johnson added a solo shot to left field in the sixth inning for her team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Fairfax, Va., for a doubleheader against George Mason on April 3 at 4 p.m.
